“The Rhythm of My Soul: A Journey Through Kathak Dance” – By Mandeera Jurakan

Dance has always been a universal language, transcending borders and connecting hearts. For me, that language is Kathak, a classical dance form from Northern India. My journey through Kathak has been a mesmerizing, filled with passion, perseverance, and profound self-discovery. It’s a tale of rhythm, grace, and storytelling.

My love affair with Kathak began almost by chance. As a teenager, I was captivated by the elegance and intricate footwork of 2 Kathak dancers I saw on stage, Manesh Maharaj and Shika Harrypaul. Their expressive eyes and graceful movements told stories more eloquently than words ever could. This serendipitous encounter planted a seed of curiosity and admiration that would grow into a lifelong passion.

I enrolled in my first Kathak class with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The initial lessons were challenging; mastering the intricate footwork (tatkar) and hand movements (mudras) required immense concentration and discipline. However, with each passing day, my feet became more attuned to the rhythms of the taal mala, and my hands started flowing more naturally. My guru’s (Shika Didi) patience and encouragement were instrumental in these formative years, helping me to understand that Kathak was not just about physical movements but also about conveying emotions and narratives.

As I delved deeper into Kathak, I realised that it is a dance form steeped in tradition and history. Originating from the ancient storytellers or ‘Kathakars’ who recited stories from mythology and history, Kathak has evolved over centuries. Learning about the rich heritage of Kathak was an enlightening experience. The dance’s intricate connection with classical Indian music, its evolution through Mughal patronage, and its role in contemporary performance arts fascinated me.

Every artist’s journey has a turning point, and mine came during a performance at a local cultural festival. It was my first team recital that was not a school concert, and we had chosen to perform a piece based on the Raas Leela – the divine dance of Lord Krishna and the Gopis choreographed by our Guru Shika. As I lost myself in the performance, I felt an indescribable connection to the music, the story, and the audience. This performance was a revelation, helping me discover my unique style and voice within Kathak. It was a blend of traditional techniques and my personal expressions, a true reflection of my journey and growth.

Like any journey, my path in Kathak has had its share of challenges. Balancing rigorous practice sessions with academic responsibilities was often exhausting. There were times when progress seemed slow, and the desire to achieve perfection led to frustration. However, every challenge taught me resilience and patience. Each performance, feedback, and critique became a stepping stone toward improvement. The triumphs, whether in the form of applause, awards, or personal satisfaction, were the sweetest rewards.

Kathak has been a spiritual journey for me. The rhythmic patterns, the graceful movements, and the emotional expressions have often felt like a form of meditation. The moments of stillness between the beats, the silent pauses in the middle of a whirl (chakkar), and the deep breaths before a new movement have taught me mindfulness and presence. Kathak has become my sanctuary, a space where I can connect with my inner self and express my deepest emotions.

A cherished milestone was dancing alongside my Guru. Performing with her was a moment of profound pride and gratitude, embodying the essence of the Guru-Shishya tradition. Her unwavering support and wisdom inspired me to pursue Kathak with dedication and passion.

To further hone my skills, I pursued the Kathak ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) examinations, achieving distinctions. This recognition was a evidence to my dedication and provided a structured framework to refine my techniques.

Inspired by my Guru, I became an assistant dance teacher at her school. Help teaching Kathak has been fulfilling, allowing me to pass on the joy of this beautiful art form, other dancers in my class have become my family, creating a supportive and loving community.

I also integrate Kathak into my occupation by conducting relaxation dance classes for children at my school. Blending Kathak with mindfulness techniques, these classes promote calm and creative expression among the children.

My name is Mandeera Jurakan and this is my Kathak journey, I hope to inspire others to find their own paths of passion and expression. Whether through dance, music, art, or any other medium, may we all discover the beauty and fulfillment that comes from following our hearts.
